Tim Gettinger wurde am 14. April 1998 in Cleveland im US-Bundesstaat Ohio geboren. Der großgewachsene Flügelstürmer misst 198 cm und bringt 98 kg auf die Waage. Er wurde im NHL Draft 2016 in der fünften Runde von den New York Rangers ausgewählt. Seine Juniorenzeit verbrachte er bei den Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in der OHL, wo er als Führungsspieler und Kapitän überzeugte. Erste Profierfahrungen sammelte er in der AHL, wo er unter anderem für das Hartford Wolf Pack und die Grand Rapids Griffins spielte. Gettinger gilt als robuster Power Forward mit guter Übersicht und defensiver Verlässlichkeit.
